  • 1.Step

Flip your knitting over so that the wrong side (or inside) is facing you. Take the right-hand needle and insert it between the first and second stitch of the left needle.

  • 2.Step

Work a regular knit stitch onto the left needle, following the usual steps, but do not slip or remove the stitch from the left needle. Now there’s a stitch on the right needle. Without twisting it, place that stitch back to the left needle.

  • 3.Step

This means that you created a new stitch on the left needle by inserting the right needle into the next stitch on the left needle, wrapping the yarn around the right needle and pulling it through the stitch on the left needle, just like a regular knit stitch. However, you will not slide or drop the stitch from the left needle after knitting it. Instead, you will keep the stitch on the left needle to maintain the number of stitches on your needle.

  • 4.Step

Repeat the previous steps for the number of stitches you need to cast on. For each new stitch, insert the right needle between the first and second stitches on the left needle.

  • 5.Step

You should now have a row of stitches on the left needle, with each new stitch sitting behind the previous stitch.

  • 6.Step

Repeat until you have cast on the required number of stitches. Once you have completed casting on the required number of stitches, you can start working on the next row of your knitting project in the usual way by following the knitting instructions for that particular row.

Some tips make it easier:

  • When using the Cable Cast On method, it's important to cast on loosely to avoid difficulties. Tight stitches can make it challenging to work with this cast-on method.
  • Keeping track of the number of stitches you've cast on is essential. It can be tricky to determine which stitch is the first cast-on stitch, so counting the stitches as you go will help you keep track.
  • To work a Cable Cast On at the beginning of a project, start by making a slip knot on the left needle. Then, knit into the slip knot and transfer the resulting stitch to the left needle, creating two stitches on the left needle. From there, continue the Cable Cast On method by inserting the right needle between the two stitches, wrapping the yarn knitwise, pulling a stitch through, and placing it on the left needle. Repeat these steps until you have cast on the required number of stitches.
